WE HAVE TO TAKE IT BACK...RIGHT BACK...TO THE DAYS BEFORE BAD LIPSTICK AND AIRBRUSHING GRIPPED THE WORLD OF BOLLYWOOD AND THERE WAS ANOTHER FORCE. THE FORCE WAS FUNK... BOLLYWOOD FUNK.
Outcaste have brought the funk back with their fantastic new release 'Bollywood Funk'; a compilation of the best grooves from the best Bollywood classics from the 60's and 70's. With tracks such as 'Jewel Thief', 'Johnny Mera Naam', 'Hare Rama Hara Krishna' and the infamous 'Shalimar' this album is a dream for funk fanatics everywhere.
Compiled by DJ Harv and Suni (aka Sutrrasonic), 'Bollywood Funk' is an explosion of funk-fuelled grooves from classic Bollywood movies. DJ Harv has been a DJ for Outcaste for the last 6 years and has been playing Bollywood funk tracks at the various clubs around England and Europe. Growing up in Hounslow during the 1980's, Harv and Suni were amazed by the funk and jazz elements contained in the musical scores of the Bollywood films they watched. They raided their parents, relatives and friends' record collections to amass a huge collection of vinyl. They spent many of their weekends visiting small musical outlets as far and wide as Bimingham, Leicester, Wolverhampton, East London and Southall.
With support for Bollywood Funk tracks from DJ's such as Gilles Peterson, there is now a massive demand for these rare vinyl tracks. The Shalimar theme tune album track fetches as much as £100 per copy with demand as far afield as Japan. Due to the amazing response and demand the 'Bollywood Funk idea was born. Harv and Suni's compilation evokes praise for the often unsung heroes of Bollywood. Musical producers such as Laxmikant Pyarelal and R.D. Burman gain recognition for their work and the amazing vocal talents of artists such as Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle are exposed. The tight breaks, freestyling flute lines and mad vocal breakdowns make 'Bollywood Funk' the album to groove to this summer.
"Is Bollywood Funky ? After years of research we here at Outcaste finally agreed it was time to present you with a fresh musical look into the mad, crazy world of Bollywood. Here then are fifteen tracks - from the raw, dirty theme from the film "Shalimar", to family favourites like "Chura Liya", to dancefloor anthems such as "Dum Maro Dum" from "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" - an album packed full of rare gems. Whether you watch Bollywood or not, this is an album of quality music that finally proves that Bollywood sure is goddam funky. Ready, ready......1, 2, 3!"
