Bejeweled bad boys, voluptuous beauties, fast cars, and heavy beats. All the ingredients for a good hip-hop video you say? Well, you'd be half right...the Indian film industry known as Bollywood was featuring all that and more in its films and soundtracks as far back as the 60's and 70's. While various hustlers, gangsters, and divas pursued one another in Technicolor frenzy, their on-screen antics were scored with a unique blend of eastern and western musical styles notable for some of the funk-fuelled rhythms that propelled them. Inspired by the jazz, funk, and soul music filtering into Bombay from America and Europe, the deft session players of Bollywood's recording studios injected their own saffron-tinged take on western rhythms into the films' backing tracks. The result is an immense library of movie soundtracks that combine the traditional Indian film music vocabulary of soaring strings and drifting flutes with western-styled funky drumbreaks, grooving basslines, and scratcy wah-wah guitars. For the committed beat-freak, some of the finest musical moments occur during the interlude sections, where the musicians were set free to play rhythm-heavy, instrumental versions of the film's big songs.

As DJs, we at Outcaste sat up and took notice, immediately recognizing that there were some potent grooves lurking in these soundtracks. And so, here is Bollywood Breaks. Taking the inspiration for our Bollywood Funk compilation one step further, we've searched out some of the best breakbeats to be found in Bombay and distilled them into their purest, heaviest form. This is also a creation inspired by the Outcaste DJs, who have been cutting and mixing these percussive gems into their club sets for years. So whether you're a DJ in constant pursuit of fresh breaks, or just a casual fan of soulful, bouncing rhythms, this sampler is a satisfying look into the Bombay film world's impressive contribution to the funky breakbeat scene. We've gone and sifted through dusty piles of vinyl to bring you the very best Bollywood has to offer, and we hope you enjoy the results as much as we do...
